Ok. All I have to say about Dessa Darling's "rant" on, well, everything, was a bit overwhelming. BUT it was hugely helpful. First of all, I have wanted to have a class with her or at least just talk to her before I graduate this spring, but this was a great start. It is really refreshing to hear a woman in this industry talk about their success and how they do it. She is not only a member of a very well-know and successful band, but she also has her own solo career (both things that I would like to have and am starting to already). She talked about how important free promotion and press is and to send a picture along with a quote for a paper, cause more than likely, your picture will end up in the paper if you do that. You need to have a good color photo, on that can also be printed well in black and white so you don't have to worry about whether it gets printed in color or greyscale...your covered either way.
She also talked about the importance of personality...DUH! But seriously, it gets you thinking a lot about what you're (I'm) doing now to show people personality...I actually went home and fixed my bio on my myspace to make it a little more "me". I also added some other little things too, cause I realized my page was a little bare.
I need to learn how to write a good press release...a really good press release.
I am definitely going to try and do everything I can for myself first, at least as far as promotion and publicity goes...I'm gonna need to save money somewhere. It even got me thinking about how I could use the contacts I already have...I think I have quite a few actually :)
Dessa coming in and talking was awesome. I wish she could have continued...I feel like she didn't even say everything she wanted to say.
