Ok. All I have to say about Dessa Darling's "rant" on, well, everything, was a bit overwhelming. BUT it was hugely helpful. First of all, I have wanted to have a class with her or at least just talk to her before I graduate this spring, but this was a great start. It is really refreshing to hear a woman in this industry talk about their success and how they do it. She is not only a member of a very well-know and successful band, but she also has her own solo career (both things that I would like to have and am starting to already). She talked about how important free promotion and press is and to send a picture along with a quote for a paper, cause more than likely, your picture will end up in the paper if you do that. You need to have a good color photo, on that can also be printed well in black and white so you don't have to worry about whether it gets printed in color or greyscale...your covered either way.

She also talked about the importance of personality...DUH! But seriously, it gets you thinking a lot about what you're (I'm) doing now to show people personality...I actually went home and fixed my bio on my myspace to make it a little more "me". I also added some other little things too, cause I realized my page was a little bare.

I need to learn how to write a good press release...a really good press release.

I am definitely going to try and do everything I can for myself first, at least as far as promotion and publicity goes...I'm gonna need to save money somewhere. It even got me thinking about how I could use the contacts I already have...I think I have quite a few actually :)

Dessa coming in and talking was awesome. I wish she could have continued...I feel like she didn't even say everything she wanted to say.

Jan? We have one more day for her maybe?! I'll write another blog on it!!

So Whitney Shaw came into class last week to tell us all about the social media that's out there that we may not have known about. She talked about facebook and myspace, which most of us kind of already knew about, but she also went more in-depth about myspace and how people can even steal your songs off your space...scary. Kinda makes me freak out a little bit, but it also got me thinking that I need to get my songs copyrighted (shh don't tell anyone they aren't copyrighted yet!!).

As far as Facebook goes...I LOVE it. I check my facebook at least twice maybe three times a day. Feel free to check out my page :) This is a place I find the easiest and most convenient place to make event invitations to all of my kinds of shows. I recently made a My Band tab which is a little profile and place to put some music up to people can listen to some of my stuff. It also has a link to my myspace profile.

She also mentioned something about Twitter...now I haven't checked this out yet, but once my band stuff gets going I think it's something I will want to look into. It seems like a very useful thing to get press releases and just some easy information out to everyone (and their mom).

Overall, it was a very useful presentation. I learned more about the things I use everyday, which is nice because you dont hear about all the tricks to some of these new technologies.

Thats all for now...check ya later! :)

So...this blog is comin' at you folks a little late...woops!

So far in class we've talked about, well, a lot. Jan has been asking us a lot of questions and they've been getting my mind thinking a lot about what's going to happen after I'm out of this place, and it's scaring the hell out of me...but I guess that's what this class is for right? Scare me now so I don't freak out when I'm out of this place?!

The Adventures of Johnny Bunko was a quick, but good read. It had 6 key points for success:

1. There is no plan.
2. Think strengths, not weaknesses
3. It's not about you.
4. Persistence trumps talent.
5. Make excellent mistakes. (I, at least I hope, I do this all the time :)
6. Leave an imprint.

I didn't buy the book and I don't have it right next to me right now to refer to which sucks now because I can't remember everything that this book said to me (I stole the 6 points from Dan's blog, Thanks Dan!). I just like not having to follow a set plan that someone (your parents) give or want for you. They want you to succeed, but what they don't realize is that we need to make our own mistakes. By giving us a plan, they could be holding us back. Just let happen what's going to happen and it should (hopefully) work out for the best.

Reading the first few chapters of Art and Fear has probably helped me more than I thought. At first I didn't really think that this book would be helpful because I felt (and still somewhat do feel) that it just states the obvious, which it does, but in doing so it gets me to think back to all those times when the certain fear overcame me, or when I felt that way, etc. and made me think about how much I grew from that or how I can use my fear as a driving force just to get my life in gear (nice car/driving analogy right?).

That's all I have for now...check ya soon.
